Tell us a little bit about what you do?

I’ve been in business for over 35 years, designing and making wedding dresses and occasion wear from scratch. For the last 5 years I’ve used my expertise to offer an extensive alteration service to brides. I understand the construction of bridal gowns and know how to make intricate and invisible alterations that make a dress fit perfectly.

In what ways can you customise a bride's gown?

There are many different ways in which gowns can be customised, from adding  sleeves, changing the neckline, adding tulle, lace, embellishments or adding a layer of organza or sparkly tulle, adding hundreds of buttons down the back, adding straps and recently brides-to-be are loving pockets.

Can you add any special elements into a dress?

Whatever a bride-to-be wants I can do. I can add special elements such as a piece of fabric from the brides mothers gown or grandmothers wedding dress or a secret pocket for a photo of a loved one.

Do most bridal gowns need to be altered to fit perfectly?

Most off the peg bridal gowns would need some alterations these dresses are not bespoke and therefore alterations are important for the dress to fit perfectly.

What are the most popular alterations?

The most popular alterations are customising the length to fit just right, also adding sleeves, letting out and taking in and more recently lining illusion bodices has become very popular.

What should brides consider when choosing a dress?

When buying a dress always consider your budget, don’t try on a dress that’s way over it, also remember to leave some of your budget for alterations. Think about body type, size and fit. Don’t be tempted to buy something that is smaller than your current size in the hope that you’ll somehow change your shape and fit into it. Also think how the dress will work in your chosen venue.

How does the alterations process work?

Firstly make an appointment with us at Lorraine Stone Designs, I would ask you to bring the dress, your shoes and preferably the underwear you intend to wear. On the first appointment you will try on the dress and together we will access what needs to be done and what you would like either added or removed. At that point I should be able to give you an exact cost for the alterations. Then if you go ahead there will be two or three more fittings until the dress is perfect.

How much does it cost to alter a dress and when should you start the process?

Unfortunately it’s not a standard answer as I never quote until I have seen the dress and know exactly how much work is involved. Most consultations are free and there is no obligations once you have been for that initial fitting. If you think your dress may need some alterations get in touch as soon as possible. If you are going to need detailed alterations to your dress give your seamstress plenty of time to make the magic happen.
