Plantasia first opened in 1990 as a stunning tropical hothouse - a glass pyramid filled with exotic plants and wildlife, quickly earning a reputation as Swansea’s very own rainforest. Over the years, the zoo has weathered financial storms, but thanks to passionate public support and a £1.1 million investment from Swansea Council, Plantasia has flourished and evolved into the incredible conservation hub it is today.

In 2018-2019, the zoo underwent an exciting transformation, introducing a layout inspired by the layers of the rainforest. With a new focus on interactive, multi-sensory experiences, Plantasia began its new chapter as a fully-fledged tropical zoo. And in 2021, the site was rebranded, adding even more activities for visitors.

A Thriving Wildlife Paradise

Fast forward to 2023, and Plantasia welcomed a record-breaking 115,000 visitors, who came to experience the zoo’s 40 animal species and over 700 tropical plants. But it’s not just about exotic animals - Plantasia is also dedicated to conservation efforts, playing a key role in the European Endangered Species Programme for Egyptian tortoises.

Plantasia has also stepped up its game with its Giants of the Past exhibit. Imagine standing face-to-face with life-sized replicas of prehistoric creatures and their modern counterparts!
